“School Lunch - What’s Cooking?” is the theme for National School Lunch Week (NSLW) 2012. This year’s theme is about celebrating and building awareness of the positive changes that have been made in school lunch programs across the country. Schools across Florida have been cooking up all sorts of exciting programs and plans, and NSLW allows you to showcase your accomplishments and educate your community about the importance of nutritious school lunches.

How can my school get involved?

Get students involved. Whether it’s a cooking demo, milk mustache contest, or creative competition, find ways to involve students and make them feel like they’re part of the process.

Keep parents in the loop. Check out http://www.myhealthyschool.com/lunchday/parent-faq.html for resources and tools to keep parents informed of how you’re celebrating. Also, check out details about National Take Your Parent to Lunch Day.

Invite special guests to attend lunch. Guests can join students for lunch and give a brief talk about the relationship between a healthy diet and success, happiness, etc.

Showcase the healthy options that are new to your 2012-13 menus.

Highlight recipes developed by Florida chefs that incorporate Florida Harvest Fresh Produce. We have partnered with Share our Strength and put together a great team of Chefs who have created wonderful recipes that would be great to use this week!
